How to install - FAQ

Before we begin:

  1. If you are lazy to go through all this, pasta Anon was kind enough to provide a fully patched and working copy. Look for Fully Updated HoneySelect in the pasta.

  2. There is a visual guide of sorts in this YouTube video. Its the one I followed, with some minor differences.

  3. Please keep a back up copy at all times. You never know when disaster strikes.

With that behind us, lets begin.

  1. Get the ISOs only from the torrent link. The DLCs and updates can be downloaded later, in a more orderly fashion.

  2. Mount the first ISO with your ISO software of choice. If you are using Windows 8 or 10, you only have to double click the ISO to mount it.

  3. Once mounted, it should appear as a DVD in My Computer or This PC. Open it via Windows Explorer to explore the contents of the ISO.

  4. Inside, you should be able to see a folder named WinRoot, and within it, the illusion folder. Now think of a place where you want to keep the game in, and copy the illusion folder to there.

    Protip, generally Japanese games have issues with spaces, like C:\Program Files, so it is always recommended to keep them as close to the C:\ as possible.

    To follow the tradition of other illusion games, copy the mentioned illusion folder, and paste it into C:\. The result path should be C:\illusion\HoneySelect.

    In rare cases, having Honey Select in C:\illusion\HoneySelect would result in a frozen black screen on start. If it happens to you, try moving it to a more "user-controlled" directory, like C:\Users\JohnDoe\illusion\HoneySelect.

  5. Once done with the copying, you should unmount ISO 1 to prevent confusion. You can right click and Eject it directly from the Windows Explorer.

  6. Now on to ISO 2, with all steps the same as ISO 1. (Mount, into WinRoot, copy illusion, paste it to where you want it, and unmount.) Both folders should merge without any conflict.

  7. Now you have the core game only. Lets proceed to the DLC and updates.

  8. Pasta Anon has prepared a list of all DLC and updates in the pasta. So go ahead and download them (not the discs, since you already had them). Keep the page open though, as the order of the DLC and updates is very important.

  9. Extract each of the updates. They may come in self-extracting archive (.exe) or in an archive (.zip or .rar). Since the extracted folder name is usually in Japanese, be sure to rename the folder to something you can understand easier (E.g. 4_addon_souki).

    Protip, do not mind the Yen symbol (¥) with the extractor. Its just the path separator for Japanese computers. For example, C:\Users\JohnDoe is the same as C:¥Users¥JohnDoe.

  10. Once done with the extraction, double check with the DLC and update order, and go into each extracted folder accordingly. Each folder should have a setup folder, which you need to copy the contents into where you had installed Honey Select earlier. Replace all existing files with every update.

    Protip, the content of the update will have some similarity with your installation folder. That is how you know you are in the right folder level. For example, the honey_souki addon has the folder abdata, which you can see in the installation folder (C:\illusion\HoneySelect\abdata).

    The FileCopy.exe is an executable which transfers the update files into your installation directory, but since this is a manual install, your system would not know the real installation directory, so there is a high chance that it might mess things up instead.

    There should also be a folder in Japanese, filled with clothing coordinate PNG files. You do not actually need them, but to complete your experience, you can copy all the PNG files and paste into C:\illusion\HoneySelect\UserData\coordinate\female.

  11. If you have arrived here, congratulations, you now have a working copy of up-to-date Japanese Honey Select.

    Protip, this is what I consider the core game. No mods, no plugins, just updates. Personally, I would strongly recommend you to keep a backup copy of this. Just zip the whole folder or however you wish.

    Other Anons might recommend you to keep a backup after you have some essential mods, but hey, we never know if any of them breaks the core game. That being said, its your choice.

  12. To complete your experience, check the pasta for "English Translations" and "Uncensor", and proceed as described.
