How to play Honey Studio- FAQ

« Return

I am new to this. Despite having played a couple of illusion titles, I have never touched studio. Please be gentle.

  1. What are scene cards?
Think character cards, but for Honey Studio (measuring 320 x 180 pixels). They contain the setup of the scene, map, and a lot more information.

  2. What is this "snowflaked cards" I hear of?
"Snowflake" is an action where you replace the display picture of the card, but the internal data and information is kept intact. As a result, snowflaked cards may not conform to the usual image dimension. Additionally, trolls usually keep an ugly character data behind a pretty display picture via snowflake. So people will be baited by the pretty card, and get a surprise.

I would recommend people to not snowflake cards if you intend to share them. But if you insist, one known application to be able to snowflake is WaifuRipper (Dilldoe).

  3. How do I import/export scene cards?
From your installed path, UserData/Studio. Copy or paste your scene image here. In some cases, the Studio folder might not be present. Just create the folder and proceed as usual.

  4. Where can I get more character/scene?
    1. Honey Select booru database, with required mods usually specified in comments.
    2. Official illusion database for character and scene. Do note that the site is restricted to JP only, so you will need a proxy or VPN.
  5. I want to share my character/scene with anons!
You can do it in the thread or the Honey Select booru (scroll down for the Add link, and tag honey_select). Remember to list the mods you have used.

  6. Can I extract the character from the scene cards?
Why yes, you can. WaifuRipper (Dilldoe) does exactly that. Load a scene card, and it will extract the character cards.

  7. Do I need any mods for this?
By the least, I strongly recommend having HS StudioAddon (Vrl0ver) and HS Pose Editor (Joan6694). ShortcutsHS (MoistenedEye) (not to be confused with Shortcut Plugin) also adds a very extensive list of features into studio.

  8. Why is it all black when I start this?
That is the default background, a plain black image. On the right menu, you should find a Map option, which allows you to load a map. Alternatively, you can change the background image via a small interface on top left menu, named BG.

  9. How do I get more maps, items or background images?
For background images, find your choice of images and place them in UserData/background. The images have to be saved in the PNG format.

You can add more maps and items via mods. But you need to run HoneySelect Item Resolver (HiR) (YashiroAmamiya) first. Unlike WideSlider or IPA patching which is only executed once, HiR needs to be executed every time you add a new mod.

    1. Download the corresponding SB3U 1.1.0, and place it somewhere accessible. It does not need to sit in your installation path.
    2. Open HiR, and specify the abdata path and the SB3U 1.1.0 path.
    3. Click the Start button and let the magic take place.
    4. If you see a Finished message, it means all is well. Boot the studio and check for the map or item.
    5. If you encounter an error message, it is usually verbose enough to let you know what is wrong. (E.g., missing an update or DLC)
  10. How do I add or delete a character or item?
When you first start the studio, you can add a female character first. Notice the Character checkbox on the right menu, and the Girl checkbox on the top left menu. To add a male character, click the Man checkbox on top left menu.

But, to add items, you click the Item checkbox on the right menu. Upon clicking an item from the list, it will be added into the environment.

Once you have added a character or item, you will notice that a bar at the top menu will be filled, and labelled with a name. This is how it works. The checkbox on the top left menu indicates the "category" of objects that you will be manipulating (namely male characters, female characters and items).

From there, you further manipulate individual objects within the category, by clicking the checkbox of the said object. As an example, assuming you have two items, one table and one chair, in order to delete the chair, first click Item on top left menu, then click the chair checkbox, and press Delete.

  11. What is IK?
IK is where you are able to control most of the character joints in order to pose in a particular fashion. You can find it on the right menu. If you turn on IK Target Display, you can see which joint you can manipulate over the X, Y and Z axis. Feel free to twist and turn around to get a hang of it.

  12. Once I turn on IK, the character goes into this T pose?
It is the default pose when a character has IK enabled.

  13. Can I use IK with Animation or H-Animation?
Yes, but IK always remember its current pose. If you have already enabled IK on a character, selecting any Animation or H-Animation will not change the pose. You have to turn off IK first, select your desired animation, back to IK to select Animation Reference and turn on IK again.

IK will now follow the animation you have selected, and the joints can be manipulated.

  14. When I try to twist the limbs, it starts to twist and skew into this unnatural position?
Open up HS Pose Editor, and try enabling/disabling the "Force Global Weight Values". If this does not solve the issue, you will need to manually readjust the targets. Try selecting a more suitable base Animation or H-animation, and work your way from there.

  15. I got more questions on Honey Studio!
Sorry, I have yet to completely move into studio, so I myself am even more clueless than you are.

For most parts, the method to fixing them is the same as character cards. You are probably missing something, be it a map or mod. For a better help environment, post in the thread.
